The Socialization of Elite Female Wheelchair Basketball Athletes

Jennifer Warkins is conducting her Dissertation research on the socialization
of elite female athletes with disabilities. The qualitative research study's
theoretical framework to guide this research is a sociological theory that
examines the process of socialization. Kenyon and McPherson (1973) note that
there are three main elements of the socialization process; socializing agents
(significant others), socializing agencies (who provide influence in different
social situations), and actors (identified by personal attributes). The
research will examine the interviews of 11 national wheelchair basketball team
members. This study developed out of the lack of research in disability sport
and the need to understand the socialization process in which an individual
comes to find out about disability sport.
