The Role of Organized Recreation and Sport Competitions in the Lives of Members of Protest Church Drs. Livengood and Place of Chicago State University are conducting a qualitative study in the metropolitan Chicago area to understand the role of organized recreation and sport competitions in the lives of members of the Protestant Church. Additionally, this investigation also seeks to understand possible conflict and tension, if any, that may occur during organized sports and recreation competitions, such as leagues, within the Protestant Church. Empirically examining the possible conflict experienced within Church sports will have important implications for leisure scholarship. For example, if conflict does occur in sporting competitions, it may be considered as inconsistent with the doctrines of the Christian faith, which advocate for qualitites such as peace and brotherhood, among others. Conversly, sporting events within the Church may be conflict-free, which would be congruent with the Chrisitian faith and therefore provide a model of peaceful conduct and sportspersonship in sport and recreation competitions. The goal of this investigation is to add to the existing research on the topic of religion and leisure as well as to understand the role of recreation within faith-based institutions.
