Research Interests

Dr. Shinew's research efforts focus on two tacks. Her primary research area focuses on the leisure behavior of racial and ethnic minorities. More specifically, she seek to delineate the complex relationships between race, gender and social class and their impact on leisure behavior, including examining both preferences and constraints. This line of research also examines the impact of discrimination on leisure choices and satisfaction. Her secondary research domain examines issues affecting the leisure behavior of women. Much of her research in this area focuses on the leisure constraints women face, and the coping strategies they employ to develop satisfying leisure lifestyles. This area of research has also examined professional development issues affecting women working in the leisure service profession.
