Proposed Topics of Research Projects for Future Graduate Students at Diversity Research Lab

The following are examples of research topics that faculty members affiliated with the DRL would be interested in collaborting on or supervising as thesis research for graduate students. Please note that this is not a comprehensive list of research topics that may be undertaken in affiliation with the DRL, but only an indication of our major areas of interest.

Dr. Monika Stodolska

· Assimilation, retention of ethnic identity and leisure - intergenerational changes in leisure behavior of ethnic minority members
. Transnationalism, ethnicity, and leisure
· Immigrant youth and leisure in ethnic neighborhoods
· Inter-ethnic/racial conflict and leisure in minority communities
· Leisure and cross-cultural contact in the US-Mexico border regions
· The effects of discrimination on leisure behavior of ethnic/racial minority members
· Gender relations and leisure among pre- and post-immigration Muslim families
· Ethnic sport organizations - their role in the retention of ethnic identity and in the dynamics of ethnic communities
·Intertemporal changes in leisure constraints. Barriers to leisure in transitional periods (e.g. immigration, college entrance, motherhood, retirement etc.)
. Physical activity among ethnic and racial minority members
. Environmental preferences and leisure behavior among ethnic and racial minority members

- The relationship between leisure engagement and health of older adults, particularly those with chronic illness
- The role of community park and recreation agencies in the delivery of health promotion/disease prevention programs
- The translation of clinically based physical activity research into community settings.
- the role of leisure services in community development

 

Dr. Carla Santos

- Cultural tourism: Development and representations.
- Community development through cultural tourism.
- Organized community tours: Development, goals and impacts.
- The potential for tourism text and images to increase or impede intercultural understanding.
- The power of text and images to influence tourists' experiences and ways of seeing.
- Cultural and historical authenticity
- Rejuvenation of urban areas through the creation of urban leisure and cultural tourism space
