Attitudes and Behaviors of Hosts Toward Tourists in a Rural Community of the Andes: The Case of San Pedro de Casta

In the summer of 2001 Jose Antonio Peralta conducted his Masters Thesis research in one of the communities of the Peruvian Andes - San Pedro de Casta.

Jose's research focused on attitudes and behaviors of members of a rural community of the Peruvian Andes toward tourists. Based on Bjorklund's and Philbrick's (1975) matrix of attitudinal/behavioral attributes of intercultural perception, the research explored the case of the community of San Pedro de Casta, that receives a permanent flow of tourists from the capital city of Lima. Two-hundred twenty-four questionnaire surveys, 7 qualitative, semi-structured interviews and direct observations were conducted between July and August 2001. Findings of this study show not only different patterns of attitudes and behaviors among certain subgroups of the local population, but also mechanisms employed by the community in order to reduce the perception of conflicts and sources of stress evoked by the economic, social and cultural differences between hosts and guests.
