Leisure of Pentecostal Christians

The purpose of this study conducted by Dr. Livengood was to examine the role of leisure in the lives of Pentecostal Christians. Grounded theory was utilized as the framework to interpret the themes that emerged from 13 semi-structured interviews. Many themes emerged from this study. First, participants defined church services and programs as leisure. The formats of the events were described as enjoyable and fun. Second, social relationships were developed through church activities and these relationships also played a vital role outside church functions. Moreover, leisure activities were used as a tool to attract non-Christians to the faith. Third, a relationship with God was seen as the important factor in determining appropriate leisure activities. This investigation detailed how Christian faith affects leisure behavior, which is an under-researched area of leisure research. Additionally, this study also showed that leisure is utilized by churches in order to encourage social relationships.
