A Study of Korean American Ethnic Festival in Chicago

As a part of dissertation research, between 2002 and 2003, Jouyeon Yi conducted a study of a Korean ethnic festival in Chicag . This study aimed to explore what roles an ethnic festival plays in building an ethnic community, creating ethnic identity, and interacting between an ethnic group and the mainstream society. In particular, research questions were as follows:

(1) why ethnic festivals are held;

(2) why people participate in, or go to ethnic festivals; and

(3) how ethnic festivals influence the participants or festival visitors among Korean Americans as well as other ethnic/racial groups.

In August 2002, she conducted participant observation as a volunteer during the festival period, and in June, July, and August, 2003, she conducted participant observation as a member of the preparation committee of 2003 Korean Street Festival in Chicago. Moreover, she conducted a survey to evaluate the festival program and she interviewed staff members and volunteers. As a result of this study, she is developing a business plan for the festival organization. Also, the result of this study will be employed in her dissertation research.
