Primary Research Interests
My primary on-going line of qualitative inquiry investigates gender and
sexuality in the cultural contexts of leisure. Leisure contexts—constructed
along lines of gender and/or sexual orientation can often reveal the effects
of marginalization and the power of resistance, thus fueling a justification
for the existence of alternative leisure settings. Equally important,
this research provides important insight into the discriminatory practices
and experiences that non-dominant populations encounter in public, mainstream
leisure settings. This is an important message for the recreation and
leisure studies field to hear and should initiate increased sensitivity
to the management of recreation settings in ways that do not reinforce
marginalization due to gender and/or sexual orientation.
