Research Interests

Megan’s research agenda centers on issues of health, diversity, gender and social disparities as they relate to leisure and communities.  In particular, she is interested in working with communities of interest or geography to address the influences of disparities, gender, and hegemony on communal and individual health.  Within this, her larger goals are to further our understanding of the specialized needs of disenfranchised groups, illuminate the existence of power structures and their effects on communities, and create environments where people actively participate in and take ownership of their communities. Therefore, while on a theoretical level she seeks to understand issues related to diversity, health, gender, power and leisure, she also hopes to empower and educate community members by collaborating with them to shape research processes and goals.

Academic Research Interests:

- Relationships between community, health, diversity and disparities issues

- Specialized needs of diverse populations including women and minorities

- Hegemonic power structures and agency as related to leisure and health settings
