Research Interests

My research calls attention to the socio cultural and political aspects of tourism in order to empower individuals to resist dominant structures.  In its most general sense, it seeks to elucidate the ideological forces that shape and organize tourism.  One of the predominant frameworks by which I identify and examine such ideological forces is through a critical analysis of representations. From this framework, my research generally follows two tracks: (1) the representations that constitute the key set of references used by producers and promoters of tourism, as well as tourists; and, (2) the ways in which tourists and hosts play with and against those representations.
