Self-Regulation and Adaptation of Leisure Among Older Adults with Arthritis

In 2006 and 2007 Dr. Laura Payne and her colleagues (Drs. Janke and Son) are conducting a study whose primary goal is to understand individuals’ adaptation of leisure activities and the impact of adaptation/non-adaptation on their subjective health and well-being. They also seek to understand the meaning of these adaptation processes to the individuals’ lived experiences and uncover personal and environmental factors believed to affect their ability to perform these processes.  Identifying ways that individuals adapt and successfully maintain activities has important implications for the design and delivery of recreation and health programs and services.  If professionals are to effectively help clients adapt to changes caused by arthritis, then they must first understand the processes of adaptation and the factors that shape these processes. The data from this study will aid in the development of a more extensive research proposal for external funding from the Retirement Research Foundation or the American Federation on Aging Research.
