LOOKING BEYOND TRADITIONAL MODELS: RACIAL AND ETHNIC ISSUES IN LEISURE RESEARCH On April 22, 2004 the Diversity Research Laboratory team at the Department of Leisure Studies, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, organized a Symposium titled: Looking Beyond Traditional Models: Racial and Ethnic Issues in Leisure Research. This Seminar brought together faculty and graduate students to explore novel approaches to addressing issues of leisure, race and ethnicity in real world settings and to define the agenda for future research on ethnicity/race and leisure. The seminar was highly interactive and outcome oriented. It was followed by a round table discussion attended by invited guests, faculty and graduate students. The goal of the seminar was to: 1. Critique existing research on the leisure of racial and ethnic minorities. 2. Discuss new trends in leisure research that focuses on racial and ethnic minorities. 3. Examine how can colleges and universities better recruit and train ethnic/racial minorities in the field of recreation, tourism, and sport. 4. Explore critical issues facing park and recreation managers serving ethnic/racial minorities. 5. Explore existing funding opportunities for research on issues of race,
